A laptop can only be called a laptop if it fits on my lap. If, instead, the whole of my body can fit on its keyboard, and the screen is big enough to kill me if it suddenly drops, it is not a laptop anymore- how about a cracktop?

Dell Offers Quickstart Data Warehouse Appliance


It's a small step, but in bundling Microsoft's SQL Server 2012 database with its own data-integration software on an appliance, Dell is moving closer to becoming a business intelligence vendor and not just a hardware supplier.
The Dell Quickstart Data Warehouse Appliance 1000, announced and made available Wednesday, is aimed squarely at midsize firms as it tops out at five terabytes of user data. By bundling and preconfiguring the software to work with Dell PowerEdge servers, the vendor says it's making data warehousing easy.
"Limited IT resources and budgets have mostly prevented mid-sized organizations from building data warehouses and realizing the insights they need," said Dell's Ben Linder, executive director, data warehousing and business intelligence, in a statement. "Dell now offers the mid-market a comprehensive, robust, affordable, and simple data warehouse solution."
Data warehouse appliances are nothing new, and they've been available from data warehousing market leaders Oracle and IBM for several years. Microsoft has partnered with Dell, HP, and others suppliers to provide preconfigured hardware for Microsoft SQL Server-based data warehouse deployments.

Dell described the Quickstart Data Warehouse Appliance 1000 as going "a step beyond" typical appliances in that it includes data-integration capabilities from Dell Boomi, the software-as-a-service vendor Dell acquired in 2010. Dell said it's also providing start-up services and training with the appliance to get customers up and running, and it will follow up with quarterly health checks to ensure ongoing success.
The base price for the appliance is $69,990, including Microsoft Windows R2 SP1 Enterprise Edition, Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Data Warehouse Appliance Edition, and a one-year subscription to Dell Boomi. It also includes the required server and storage hardware to support 5 terabytes of user data and the support services mentioned above.
It's unclear just how "bundled in" Dell Boomi can be given that it's described as a "lightweight, subscription-based data integration service." Responding to email questions, a Dell spokesperson told Information Week that the subscription-based software includes a library of data connectors, visual integration tools, and a run-time execution engine.
As for query and analysis, what most people think of when the hear "BI," Dell said it recommends that those tools be run on a separate server. Even though Microsoft SQL Server 2012 is preinstalled and configured as part of the appliance, the appliance license does not include access to SQL Server Integration Services, Analysis Services, or Reporting Services.
"If customers already have SQL Server licenses on other servers, they can use those with the Quickstart Appliance," said a Dell spokesperson.
Microsoft confirms that Dell's new appliance is the first to be based on Microsoft SQL Server 2012, which was released in April. As such it's the first appliance to feature new SQL Server 2012 capabilities including the x Velocity In-memory Column Store, which is said to speed queries and optimize data compression.
Dell's push into data warehousing and business intelligence is part of a larger push into the enterprise software market, which was given a boost last week when Dell announced its $2.4 billion acquisition of Quest Software. Quest's portfolio includes BI, database-management, and Hadoop-related software that could find its way into future Dell data warehouse appliance bundles.
HP first mounted a push into business intelligence with its 2006 acquisition of the Knights bridge BI consultancy, but that initiative seemed to stall when HP's failed high-end Neoview data warehousing platform was abandoned in late 2010. In early 2011, HP acquired the Vertica database, and it subsequently introduced HP Vertica Analytic System appliances built on HP software.
HP's appliance is a much higher-end, big-data-scale offering compared to the Dell Quickstart Appliance 1000. In fact, despite all the hype about big data, the vast majority of enterprises manage less than 10 terabytes of data.
Dell is starting with the broadest base in the market, and it told Information Week that it will announce another member of the appliance family later in the year. So look for a bigger appliance and, perhaps, a deeper, more BI-capable software bundle.

Hacker finds way to loot in-app store items and posts a how-to on YouTube.


A Russian hacker has managed to find a way around the security checks in Apple's in-app purchasing system to make content sold in iOS apps available for free.
The hacker, identifying himself as ZonD80, has posted a YouTube videode monstrating how he was able to create an in-app proxy that authorizes in-app purchases at no cost.
"To buy in-app content," he says in the video,"you must install two certificates and set the IP address of the DNS to a specific IP."
On a Blogger hosted site, he has asked for donations to support the development of his project. The PayPal email address he provides for receipt of funds is a Me.com address, a domain owned by Apple. Presumably this will simplify Apple's effort to identify the hacker, though doing so won't stop the spread of his code: ZonD80 notes on his blog that he has sent the source code and control of the hosting server to someone else.

In-app purchasing has become one of the leading sources of revenue for app developers. ABI Research in February predicted that revenue from sale of content in apps will outpace revenue from selling the apps themselves in 2012.
Apple appears to be taking steps to limit the damage. Russian blog i-ekb.ru includes a note, purportedly from ZonD80, indicating that Apple has filed a takedown notice with the service provider of his website.
It's doubtful that Apple will ask Google to remove the hacker's Blogger site--it isn't hosting any code so there might not be any legal foundation to request that Google remove it, unless Apple claims that the domain, in-appstore.com, violates its trademarks.
The hack appears to work on iOS versions 3.0 through 6.0, presently available only in beta form to iOS developers. But not all apps with in-app purchasing are vulnerable. Apple provides a mechanism to validate in-app purchases, in order to allow purchases to be restored on erased or new devices. Developers who have implemented receipt verification, which requires tracking in-app sales using a separate server, can query Apple to confirm the authenticity of purchased items.

But there are also fixed buttons below the Touchscreen in addition to a track pad. BlackBerry Blade can be connected to some other devices using the MicroVGA, MicroHDMI or even Micro USB ports and the Blade comes having a MicroSD slot for expanded memory. The smartphone can also handle each HTML5 and Adobe Flash in addition to employing a 4G LTE connection to download content on the smartphone.

Yahoo fixes password-pilfering bug, explains who's at risk



Yahoo said it has fixed the flaw that allowed hackers to steal more than 450,000 passwords from one of its many services.
The company also provided more information about whose passwords had been pilfered.
"We have...now fixed this vulnerability, deployed additional security measures for affected Yahoo! users, enhanced our underlying security controls and are in the process of notifying affected users," the company announced in a post to its blog early Friday.
Yahoo has offered no specific information about the attack, how it was carried out or even when. Itconfirmed the attack Thursday.
The hacker group D33Ds Company took responsibility for the breach, saying it had exploited a basic SQL injection vulnerability in a Yahoo service to steal the usernames and passwords associated with 453,000 accounts. The group published the passwords and email addresses on the Web.
Yahoo also confirmed that the stolen account credentials belonged to registered users of its Yahoo Contributor Network, which was previously known as Associated Content.
Yahoo Contributor Network is a platform that generates high-volume, low-cost content by letting writers photographers, and others share their work with Yahoo members and earn money based on the traffic their content generates. Users who contribute to the network are required to sign in using a Yahoo, Google or Facebook ID.
Associated Content, which was founded in 2005, was bought by Yahoo for just over $100 million in May 2010. Yahoo renamed the service in late 2011, when it also launched Yahoo Voices, a portal where users access content posted by the Yahoo Contributor Network.
According to Yahoo, only people who registered as providers with Associated Content before the 2010 acquisition were affected by the password theft. "[The] compromised file was a standalone file that was not used to grant access to Yahoo! systems and services," Yahoo maintained.
Just under a third of the stolen passwords were linked to accounts registered to a yahoo.com email address, security company Rapid7 said Thursday. Significant chunks of the file, however, were composed of Gmail (23.6% of all accounts) and Hotmail (12.2%) addresses.
All users with older Associated Content accounts, no matter the email address used, should immediately change the passwords for those email accounts as well as any identical or similar passwords used to secure other online services or websites, security experts have said.
Rapid7 security researcher Marcus Carey said yesterday that the file published by D33Ds included 123 government email accounts -- ones ending with ".gov" -- and 235 military-related addresses (ending with ".mil"). Among the government email accounts, Carey found several associated with the FBI, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Security experts have been scathing in their criticism of Yahoo, in large part because the passwords were stored in plain-text, making the hackers' job of exploiting the stolen accounts a breeze.
Yesterday, Mark Bower, a data protection expert and executive at Voltage Security, said, "It's utter negligence to store passwords in the clear."
Also on Thursday, Rob Rachwald, director of security strategy at Imperva, took Yahoo to the woodshed. "To add insult to injury, the passwords were stored in clear text and not hashed (encoded)," Rachwald wrote in a blog post. "One would think the recent LinkedIn breach would have encouraged change, but no. Rather, this episode will only inspire hackers worldwide."
The LinkedIn breach Rachwald referenced came to light last month, and involved approximately 6.5 million encrypted passwords belonging to members of the networking service.
In its Friday blog, Yahoo again apologized to users affected by the password theft.

Japan's FujiFilm is suing Google's Motorola Mobility subsidiary over four patents associated with digital camera and photo technology in cellphones.
The lawsuit has its roots in April 2011, when FujiFilm says it first notified Motorola that it believed the cellphone maker was infringing on the four patents. The companies held a number of face-to-face meetings, according to FujiFilm. The matter was apparently not resolved to FujiFilm's liking and that led to this week's lawsuit.
The patents in question include:
U.S. Patent 6,144,763, which covers the capturing of color pictures by a cellphone and their conversion to monochrome images;
U.S. Patent 6,915,119, which addresses a "telephone and data transmitting method." FujiFilm alleges a number of Motorola devices infringe on this patent through their use of Bluetooth or Wi-Fi as a means to communicate with a computer or other device;
U.S. Patent 7,327,886, covering the facial detection system included in some Motorola cellphones; and
U.S. Patent 5,734,427, concerning the processing of a high-resolution image into a lower-resolution image for display on an electronic viewfinder.
The lawsuit alleges a number of Motorola handsets infringe some or all of the patents, including the Droid X, X2, 2 Global, Bionic, 3, Pro; and the Atrix 2, Electrify, Photon 4G, XPRT, Defy, Cliq 2 and Titanium handsets.
In its complaint, FujiFilm asks the court to find infringement in its favor, for Motorola to pay damages to be decided at trial and for Motorola to pay FujiFilm's legal costs.
FujiFilm, Motorola Mobility and Google could not immediately be reached for comment.
The case, number 12-03587, was filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court in San Jose.
